Rye is one of those grains that is difficult to grow in Australia because we have a very different soil topology here to where rye comes from in Central Europe. Thus, our rye flour is quite harsh by comparison with the European's offering, according to German bakers who have worked extensively with rye.
Here in Australia we also have less grades of rye flour too - ours tends to be quite coarse, and so it's difficult to make a lighter rye bread with what's available domestically.
Having said that, there is a strong demand for all kinds of rye breads, and for good reason - rye has a wonderful, tangy flavour, and makes quite amazing sourdough starter. Really, rye and sourdough go together!
Rye bread is rich with benefitial nutrients, improves digestion, helps weight loss, maintains healthier blood sugar levels, prevents diabetes and heart disease etc.

Riga bread
By: hradmuller34020 on 24 February 2019I love the product for its flavour and texture reminding me of my youth in Europe. Indeed to this day Rye bread such as this is daily fare in a lot of European countries I visit. Australian white bread has little nutritional value and as such I don't use it unless it is a sourdough.

My savior!
8 June 2018After Helgas betrayed not only me but probably the country by cancelling the sweet and sour rye bread which left me at a loss....my childhood over, my children would never know the Homley taste of black bread! My borscht will never be the same but then like a some sort of soup angel a courier knocks on my door only days after I had googled, found and ordered from Ruski Way - Riga sweet and sour tastes better then any other black bread - it is the true taste of comfort and memories of sitting at my Vec Mum’s table are in every bite....as long as they supply it I will buy it!!!!
